2024 NFL Offseason: Quarterback Movement and Team Strategies

The quarterback carousel has been a recurring theme in recent offseasons, and it’s expected to continue in 2024. Questions arise about where free agents will land, who might get traded, and which teams will vie for top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

As the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine approaches in two weeks and the free-agent negotiation window opens on March 11, discussions with various NFL sources shed light on the current landscape.

The Bears face a pivotal decision this offseason, holding the No. 1 overall pick and possessing a valuable trade asset. Speculation suggests they may part ways with Justin Fields to make room for a potential top pick like Caleb Williams from USC. This could spark a competitive market for Fields, with teams like the Falcons eyeing a quarterback upgrade.

The Commanders, armed with the No. 2 pick, also face a crucial choice. They could opt for a quarterback like North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels, or consider other options like drafting a position player and acquiring a veteran like Fields.

The Patriots, positioned at No. 3, are expected to explore top quarterback prospects amid their transition into the Jerod Mayo era. Meanwhile, the Broncos contemplate their quarterback situation, including the possibility of renegotiating Russell Wilson’s contract to retain him in Denver.

The Vikings aim to retain Kirk Cousins but are open to alternatives if negotiations fail. They might pursue a more affordable veteran while considering drafting a quarterback, bearing in mind the contract status of key players like Justin Jefferson and Danielle Hunter.

The Raiders, under new leadership, are evaluating options at quarterback but haven’t delved deeply into the incoming rookie class yet. The Lions look to address Jared Goff’s contract situation after his contributions to the team’s recent successes.

Miami is poised to negotiate an extension for Tua Tagovailoa following his promising performance in the previous season, while the Buccaneers seek to retain Baker Mayfield but anticipate higher costs in contract negotiations.

The Giants express confidence in Daniel Jones’s recovery from injury and are positioned to potentially make moves in the draft to secure a top quarterback. In Pittsburgh, significant changes are expected in the quarterback room, with Kenny Pickett likely to lead amid speculation about the addition of free agent Ryan Tannehill under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
