A Liverpool player is poised to surpass a 64-year-old record, outshining the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.

As Euro 2024 kicks off, 10 Liverpool players are eyeing success, with Dominik Szoboszlai leading Hungary for the first time tomorrow, aiming to become the youngest captain in the tournament’s history.

Andy Robertson leads Scotland today against Germany, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez anticipate featuring for England against Serbia on Sunday.

The Netherlands boasts the most Liverpool players, including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch. Szoboszlai’s captaincy marks a historic moment, unmatched since the inception of the European Championships in 1960.

Cristiano Ronaldo became Portugal’s captain at 23, but he didn’t lead the team in a major tournament until two years later. Harry Kane captained England at the World Cup in 2018 at around three months older than Szoboszlai, while Kylian Mbappe first captained France at 24.

Szoboszlai, who was 22 when he first captained Hungary, holds immense stature in his homeland and will lead his nation against Switzerland this weekend. His significance within Hungary cannot be overstated.

In a recent press conference, Szoboszlai expressed his gratitude for being named the youngest team captain in European Championship history, thanking Hungary manager Marco Rossi for the opportunity. Reflecting on his role, he emphasized his personal growth, striving to be a role model and support his teammates. Szoboszlai also acknowledged the guidance and advice he received from senior players like Adam Szalai and Peter Gulácsi, highlighting the supportive atmosphere within the team since his captaincy announcement.
