Arsenal recall star from loan spell

Brazilian winger Marquinhos has been called back by Arsenal from his miserable loan at Nantes, the club has revealed.

The 20-year-old signed with the Ligue 1 team in the summer, but in his 149 minutes of football play at the Stade de la Beaujoire, he was merely a minor player.

During his disastrous stint in France, Marquinhos made just seven appearances in the top division, contributing just one assist. He was substituted off the field at the 58-minute mark of his lone start against Clermont.

Last Friday, Nantes played their first Coupe de France match after the break. Marquinhos, however, did not play in the match since he chose to represent Brazil’s Under-23 team in the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament.

Following reports earlier in the month that Arsenal was in negotiations to end Marquinhos’s Nantes loan, the Gunners have officially confirmed that the South American has been called back from Ligue 1 and will shortly be reunited with his country’s squad.

In the summer of 2022, Arsenal defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers to buy Marquinhos from Sao Paulo for a meager £3 million, and he made an instant impression in North London.

Before making his Premier League debut against Brentford later that month, Marquinhos had a dream start for the North London club in September 2022, when he scored a goal and provided an assist in a 2-1 Europa League victory over FC Zurich.

After earning his stripes at the youth level in his first few weeks with the club, the Brazil youth international made six appearances for Mikel Arteta’s team in the first part of the 2022–2023 season. He then played the second half of the season in the Championship with Norwich.

Like his time at Nantes, Marquinhos did not leave a lasting impression at Carrow Road, managing just one goal and one assist in 11 games in the second division.
