Assessing the Dominance: Bulls, Lakers, and Warriors – A Coach’s Perspective

Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Brian Shaw recently discussed why he believes the Golden State Warriors, even with Kevin Durant, don’t belong in the same echelon as the 1996 Chicago Bulls or the Los Angeles Lakers of the three-peat era.

According to Shaw, the presence of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant on the Bulls and Lakers respectively neutralizes each other, leaving the Warriors with no one to counter Shaquille O’Neal. Shaw emphasized the strength of role players on both the Bulls and Lakers squads, implying the Warriors lack comparable depth. He further argued that the Warriors’ style of play, heavily reliant on three-point shooting, would play into the hands of a dominant force like Shaq, with no defender on their roster capable of containing Jordan.

While Shaw acknowledged the offensive prowess of the Warriors, he highlighted the defensive vulnerabilities of their system, particularly against formidable opponents like Jordan or Shaq. Ultimately, Shaw leaned towards the Lakers of the three-peat era, citing their dominance fueled by the Shaq-Kobe duo, though he stopped short of outright dismissing the Bulls’ superiority.

Reflecting on the three teams, the Lakers’ three consecutive titles from 2000 to 2002, propelled by the unstoppable force of Shaq and the burgeoning talent of Kobe, stand out. Similarly, the 1996 Bulls, led by the incomparable Michael Jordan during his prime, demonstrated unmatched excellence with a historic 72-win season. Meanwhile, the Warriors of 2017 and 2018, boasting the combined skills of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson, showcased remarkable offensive prowess, albeit with defensive vulnerabilities.

While each team has its merits, the completeness and depth of the Bulls’ roster give them a significant edge in the debate. Despite their offensive firepower, the Warriors would likely struggle defensively against the formidable talents of Jordan or Shaq, making the Bulls the favored team in this hypothetical matchup.
