Charlie Cresswell to leave Leeds United before January transfer deadline

Charlie Cresswell might quit the team for game time if Leeds United signs Ben Godfrey before the transfer window closes, according to Paul Robinson.

Before declaring that the door was open again ahead of the FA Cup draw with Plymouth Argyle, Daniel Farke had shut the young player out of first-team contention during a behind-the-scenes debate over his playing time [The Athletic, 26 January].

Phil Hay has stated that the two parties’ decision to patch things up was motivated by convenience, as Farke was having trouble bringing in defensive reinforcements and the 21-year-old was not forthcoming with viable transfer out possibilities.

Despite the sense of starting Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon ahead of the “quality” young player, Robinson feels that his growth is stagnating at Elland Road. Additionally, Everton’s Godfrey is said to be a potential new acquisition by the deadline, which might force Cresswell out.

The Toffees defender, 26, has become a target in January; Robinson has even been informed that a transfer is almost finalized.

“He’s a talented young player who’s having trouble getting into the game right now,” he exclusively stated to MOT Leeds News about Cresswell.

It’s a challenging one. Because the manager will want to keep him as a quality player, he finds himself in a very difficult situation right now.

However, by keeping him around to play games and further his own personal growth, you could say that development has been halted.

“He has performed incredibly well while on loan and has showed a lot of potential, but he is struggling to establish himself in the starting lineup or to come on as the first substitute in the event that one of the center halves gets hurt.

“You see the caliber of the player in front of him, Rodon’s play this year, he’s clearly first choice.

“This year, while he’s been healthy, Pascal Struijk has really stepped up to accept the captaincy, but [Liam] Cooper has struggled to establish himself on the squad.

However, he will be required if any of those suffer injuries or are suspended. He is in an extremely challenging situation, but you can see both sides of it.
