Chicago Bulls’ Patrick Williams to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery for Left Foot Injury Ahead of Free Agency

The Chicago Bulls have revealed that Patrick Williams will undergo surgery for a left foot injury, effectively ending his season just before he enters NBA free agency.

Williams hasn’t been on the court since January 25, when he was diagnosed with acute bone edema, which has now progressed to a stress reaction after further medical evaluation.

At 22 years old, Williams was in a pivotal contract year, with his future with the Bulls hanging in the balance. He’s due to become a restricted free agent in the summer, pending a $12,973,527 qualifying offer from the team.

This season has been a mix of highs and lows for Williams, who was drafted fourth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft from Florida State. In 43 games, including 30 starts, he’s averaged 10.0 points and 3.9 rebounds, shooting 44.3% from the field and 39.9% from three-point range.

This isn’t the first time Williams has had his season cut short due to injury, as he also dealt with a broken wrist that limited him to 17 games in the 2021-22 season. Throughout his four-year NBA career, he’s averaged 9.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

The Bulls are grappling with multiple injury setbacks beyond Williams. Zach LaVine is out for the season following surgery on his right foot in February, while Torrey Craig is awaiting re-evaluation in two to four weeks due to a right knee sprain suffered during the All-Star break. Additionally, Lonzo Ball has missed two consecutive seasons due to a knee injury.

With the roster depleted by injuries, the workload has increased for DeMar DeRozan and Coby White, who lead the NBA in total minutes played. Despite these challenges, the Bulls currently sit ninth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 26-30, having recently suffered a loss to the Boston Celtics, the top team in the league.
