Defensive Resurgence: Bucks’ Impressive Victory Streak Under Doc Rivers

When the Bucks surged to a 110-100 lead against the Clippers on Monday, Patrick Beverley and Bobby Portis celebrated exuberantly, echoing the fervor felt by the 17,875 fans at Fiserv Forum who recognized the significance of the victory.

Despite the absence of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, the Bucks achieved one of their most notable wins of the season, extending their winning streak to six games since the All-Star break. Under Doc Rivers’ leadership, the team has displayed inspired basketball, emphasizing defensive intensity that was notably lacking under the previous coaching regime led by Adrian Griffin.

Despite criticism aimed at Rivers, he has effectively transformed the Bucks’ fortunes. Since taking over on Jan. 29, the team boasts the fifth-best defensive rating in the league (109.6) and the best (102.6) since the All-Star break. Prior to defeating the Clippers 113-106, the Bucks held their opponents to under 100 points in four consecutive games, a remarkable achievement in today’s high-scoring NBA.

While their offensive output has dipped, with their offensive rating slipping from 120.1 to 115.5, the Bucks have prioritized fundamental defense over simply outscoring opponents. This approach involves more defensive switching and maintaining Brook Lopez in drop coverage, a significant departure from Griffin’s defensive strategy. Even Damian Lillard, not known for his defensive prowess, acknowledges the effectiveness of this new approach.

“We’ve placed our trust in communication defensively,” Lillard remarked after the Clippers game. “We rely on each other to execute our roles, and it’s the same on offense. Our team sees the positive outcomes from playing this way, even during tough moments in games. We trust it, and it’s paying off.”

While some may dismiss the Bucks’ recent success as a temporary streak, the upcoming games will be a litmus test of their potential threat to the Celtics’ dominance in the East. In the coming weeks, the Bucks face challenging matchups against the Warriors, Lakers, Clippers, Sixers, Suns, and Celtics, which will truly gauge their capabilities.
