DIVING ALERT: LIVERPOOL MUST BE CAREFUL NOW…

When Luis Diaz went down for the first of the Reds’ two penalties against Newcastle on Monday night, even Gary Neville said straightaway that the Colombian had disgraced himself.

It was embarrassing, to use Mikel Arteta’s words. A scandal.

What is mind-boggling, to put it mildly, is how the spot-kick was allowed to stand when there was minimal touch. Football is NOT TENNIS! Players must have contact.

Justice was delivered when Mo Salah was missed the spot kick, but not when Diogo Jota did his slump dive.

Cheating was the cause of both prizes. It’s time to confront it head-on. Since Jota was not even physically touched, it is impossible to classify it as simulation.

The acts of both players simply serve to reinforce the idea that some Reds players are constantly “looking for it.” On the night, there wasn’t even a need for it because Liverpool was the superior team for extended periods.

Due to referees’ memories of incidents like Monday’s, Jurgen Klopp’s team may find themselves at a disadvantage as the season climaxes and one or two significant decisions may work against them.

They enjoyed this one, we hope they don’t weep when the case goes against them, for real
