UNDER PRESSURE: ERIK TEN HAG GIVEN FOUR MATCHES TO SAVE HIS JOB

To prove to INEOS that he is the ideal man for Manchester United, Ten Hag has given himself four games.

Man Utd anticipates welcoming back players, and Erik ten Hag must improve his performance to stay in the game.

Now Erik ten Hag should be able to hear the ticking of the clock. After losing 14 games before 2023 ended, he is worryingly running out of time at the Theatre of dreams.

Although still in his position and is not in danger of losing it anytime soon, this season is becoming the worst since Sir Alex Ferguson. Monday’s loss to League One Wigan Athletic would undoubtedly hasten the transition in the dugout.

Ten Hag hasn’t publicly called for more recruits, but he undoubtedly wants to bolster his team. That seems improbable for a number of reasons: Ten Hag’s inconsistent transfer history, and United’s desperate attempts to meet the FFP requirements. Not to mention the delay in receiving approval from the Premier League for INEOS’s investment in the team.

Ten Hag thinks that the kind of boost that a transfer or two often provides will instead come from the resolution of an injury crisis.

Without a question, United’s injury problems have been problematic this season, and he has started to bring it up more frequently as he feels the pressure mounting on his own position and the supporters’ patience beginning to run thin.

United is nine points out of the top four in the Premier League after losing half of its 28 games so far this season. And surrounded by Brighton, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Wolves, all within three points.

For Ten Hag to endure much longer, something needs to happen, and he’s expecting that this month will see the return of important players, such Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, and Casemiro.

Prior to Saturday’s trip to Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag stated that the team’s first match of the second half of the season resulted in a performance and outcome that seemed all too familiar.

That quartet is yet to make a comeback; Maguire is a loss due to his form, Malacia is a supporting role, and Casemiro and Mount were already struggling before their injuries. Martinez is the player that may have the biggest impact and is the most notable absentee.

Ten Hag has put pressure on himself to find better performances because of his assertions that players will be returning, including the return of Rasmus Hojlund from illness. The rest of the nation will be staring at United on Monday, thinking they’re ready for a surprise, but the trip to Wigan should basically take care of itself.

Get over that and Ten Hag may try to buy himself some time, or at least save his job, over the course of four Premier League games. He will welcome back his injured players for crucial matches against Tottenham, Wolves, West Ham, and Aston Villa between January 14 and February 11. Those teams are all grouped around United in the table.

Now the team is fit, there can be no justifications. Regaining their Premier League form has become United’s first objective following their early elimination from both Europe and the Carabao Cup. With this string of important games, that has to get underway.

Ten Hag will lose his job if this squad keeps making mistakes in those games. He needs to deliver now that he has informed INEOS of what to expect.
