Erik ten Hag U-turns on “perfect” Man Utd star involved in training ground bust-up

Despite Hannibal Mejbri’s bright start to the season, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag seems to have changed his mind and is prepared to split ways with the midfield player.

Since arriving from Monaco in 2017, Hannibal has spent time playing in the United development system, where he has been billed as the next big thing. The Tunisia international received some first-team action in the early season, scoring his first Premier League goal in a 3-1 loss to Brighton.

After such a strong start, a lot of United supporters anticipated that this season would be Hannibal’s breakthrough year. It appeared he may be leaving the club before a ball was ever kicked because of an altercation on the training field shortly before Ten Hag and Alex Telles—now of Al Nassr—arrived.

Following a stint on loan at Birmingham during Ten Hag’s rookie season, it appeared that the Dutchman had decided Hannibal was unnecessary, eager to steer clear of the commotion surrounding the midfielder’s altercation with Telles. But a series of impressive performances turned the tide, and the Red Devils manager even called Hannibal’s away performance at Burnley “perfect”.

Having said that, it seems like Ten Hag has changed his mind once more and is now prepared to send Hannibal on a second loan spell, this time for the rest of the current campaign with the Spanish team Sevilla.

There may be an option to buy included in the agreement, which would indicate that United is not too concerned about losing Hannibal for good. If Sevilla does sign Hannibal to a long-term contract in the summer, the Red Devils should receive a respectable sum.

The La Liga team was monitoring the Tunisian’s circumstances during the summer, when he was on the verge of leaving Manchester for sunny Spain. However, Hannibal had an opportunity to establish himself as a regular starter as many important United midfielders sustained injuries.

After five months, the scenery has changed, and Hannibal is eager to get out. In order to have a better understanding of his club future, the 20-year-old has chosen not to travel with the Tunisia national squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hannibal’s not the first United talent to move from United to Sevilla on loan. Midway through the 2021–2022 season, Anthony Martial made the same decision. Telles, Hannibal’s fight opponent from the training ground, did the same the next season.
