Expanding Horizons: NFL Teams Extend Girls Flag Football League in the UK

Observing International Women’s Day, the New York Jets and Chicago Bears of the NFL have expanded the NFL Girls Flag League in the UK, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals, especially in promoting grassroots involvement in American football and diversity.

The 2024 season of the league, a non-contact version of American football, kicked off with 200 students from 21 schools at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium in Southwest London.

The Jets expressed their enthusiasm for bolstering their dedication to UK youth and broadening the Girls Flag league, emphasizing their aim to enhance female participation in sports while imparting valuable life lessons.

Following the success of the inaugural season in the London Borough of Ealing, participation has surged from 120 to 260 for the 2024 season. Structurally, the league comprises two conferences overseen by the Jets and Bears, respectively, with the winning teams slated to compete in a Championship event on May 20. Commercial interest has also been piqued, with Nike, an NFL partner, producing official team kits as a presenting sponsor of the flag tournament.

The Chicago Bears echoed the sentiment of supporting the growth of girls’ flag football, noting its local and international expansion, including recent sanctioning in Chicago and Illinois, and its inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games. The Bears expressed excitement about returning to the UK for the league’s second year, anticipating the enthusiasm for American football, particularly with the Bears scheduled to play in London in October.

Grassroots engagement remains integral to the NFL’s UK expansion strategy, as American football has gained popularity over the past decade. The league’s growth aligns with plans for potential expansion, including the establishment of the NFL Foundation in Birmingham and Greater Manchester, paving the way for a potential UK franchise in the future. Additionally, the Super Bowl, featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, attracted a record audience on Sky Sports, highlighting the sport’s increasing appeal.

Afia Law, NFL International Flag Football Development Manager, emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Jets and Bears NFL Girls Flag league in fostering the sport’s development and female participation. Law highlighted the lasting impact of flag football experiences and friendships, hoping they inspire more young girls to engage in the sport.
