FIX THE FALL OR GET THE SACK: BOARD TELLS DANIEL FARKE

Although Leeds aren’t the first team to struggle against Carlos Corberan side, they looked entirely out of sorts from the start against West Brom.

Obvious penalty shouts aside, Leeds did very little to make Alex Palmer’s life difficult in the Baggies goal, and the conceeded from an avenue that most fans could see coming a mile off –Jed Wallace finally taking advantage of the space gifted him on their right flank by Sam Byram, tucking in at left-back.

After a brilliant first save from Karl Darlow, Grady Diangana needed another lucky bite at the cherry to score, and Leeds could have played all night without finding an equalizer. The team made no changes that would have altered the game’s outcome or jeopardized the home team’s chances of winning all three points.

Despite the quality of players at his disposal, Farke hasn’t been able to solve one persistent problem: when teams force Leeds to play only in settled possession against a low block. Nevertheless, he has shown himself to be a tactically sound manager in many of Leeds’ toughest games this season, including all three games against Leicester and Ipswich. So it is still too early to call for his head.

The first team to defeat Leeds by sitting deep was Sheffield Wednesday, and since then, every team that has done so—including most recent opponents, Preston and the Baggies—have been successful.

Even with so many attackers on the field, it makes sense for the game to alter shape in order to disrupt opponents’ defensive strategies. However, there is still a serious problem with the team’s incapacity to exploit openings regardless of formation.

Whatever the solution is, it needs to happen quickly, whether it’s a new signing or enhancing our control over bottom blocks.
