Surprise Girona, the Spanish team vying for the title, defeated Celta Vigo 1-0 on Sunday to take back the top spot in La Liga. With a facile 2-0 victory over Valencia at home, Atletico Madrid moved up to third place on goal differential, above the ailing champions Barcelona.

Girona led by Michel Sanchez now sits one point ahead of Real Madrid, who defeated Las Palmas on Saturday, despite the Catalan team still having one game remaining. In a game that Girona generally controlled, Portu finished well in the 20th minute to put them ahead. However, they were unable to secure a second goal.

In 17th place, two points above the relegation zone, is Rafa Benitez’s Celta.

Girona, who are in the top flight for the first time in their history, are currently fighting it out with the giants of Spain for La Liga. “We knew we had to take advantage of the chances we had, in the first half we made a lot of chances to score, they had some too,” said Portu, a winger for Girona. “At this stage of the league the important thing is three points and competing.

” Despite this, Girona’s players and staff have been reluctant to acknowledge that the team is a serious contender for the title. “The main thing for us is that we shouldn’t be thinking too far ahead, that would be a mistake,” Portu continued.

“We understand that we will be leaving teams behind us to get into the European spots, we have to be practical, and that’s our aim.”

Girona seized the early momentum on a hard surface at the Balaidos stadium, home of Celta.

As per Girona coach Michel, “We had enough personality to hold onto the ball in challenging playing conditions.”

“They got chances, as we had, but I think we were worthy victors.”

Artem Dovbyk’s header was saved by Celta goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, but Yangel Herrera struck the side netting as an early warning.

The Ukrainian, who currently shares the league lead in goals scored with Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid with 14 goals, had other opportunities to score but was unable to increase his total.

Paulo Gazzaniga of Girona made a great stop against Oscar Mingueza before his team seized the lead.

Portu was located by Miguel Gutierrez, who skillfully maneuvered and stroked home at the near post.

After a brilliant team play that saw his countrymen Dovbyk set him up, Viktor Tsygankov blasted over.

Jorgen Strand Larsen gave Celta a chance when he headed against the crossbar, but that was the closest they got to equalizing.

In a fiercely contested second half, Girona tightened up defensively, and as the time ran out, Celta was unable to create any clear opportunities.

“Managed the game.”

Following Saturday’s 5-3 home loss to Villarreal, fourth-place winners Barcelona announced coach Xavi Hernandez’s departure from the team in June.

With Memphis Depay and Samuel Lino scoring goals against Valencia in the eighth, Atletico comfortably overtook them.

Last season, Lino, who was on loan at Valencia, finished with aplomb following an excellent assist from Antoine Griezmann.

After midfielder Koke sent the ball out to the right flank, Depay added the second goal in the 57th minute with a diving header from Nahuel Molina’s cross.

“We executed the game really well overall,” Diego Simeone, the Atletico coach, expressed his satisfaction.

Following an injury, Reinildo Mandava made his Atletico debut.

“It makes me very pleased that that everyone really loves him,” he stated.

Alvaro Morata, the striker, experienced some thigh soreness, according to the coach, and he would be assessed on Monday.

After just joining from Royal Antwerp, Simeone started new signing Arthur Vermeeren on the bench, and Juventus forward Moise Kean, who is soon to join Atletico, observed from the presidential box.

Fifth-place Athletic Bilbao was held to a 0-0 draw away from Cadiz, and eighth-place Sevilla was unable to win at home in the league after drawing 1-1 with Osasuna.
