Injury Comebacks Highlight Major League Baseball Spring Season

Monday marked a significant return from injury in baseball as Shohei Ohtani faced live pitching after a 169-day absence due to elbow surgery. Ohtani, who recently signed a $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, may make his debut for the team on Opening Day in Seoul on March 20.

Ohtani is among several players recovering from injuries, with notable names like Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, Corey Seager, and Tyler Mahle also working towards returns.

Jacob deGrom, who underwent Tommy John surgery in June, is gradually progressing through his recovery, while Scherzer, recovering from back surgery, aims for a return around June. In the Dodgers camp, Walker Buehler, a key pitcher, is expected to miss spring training due to an elbow injury that led to Tommy John surgery in 2022.

Meanwhile, Chris Sale, with a history of injuries, is hopeful for a fresh start with the Atlanta Braves after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox. Lastly, Edwin Díaz, the New York Mets’ closer, is back from a year-long injury layoff and is being cautiously managed as the team aims for his return to top form.
