Injury Woes and Defensive Struggles: Hawks Coach Snyder Addresses Challenges After Loss to Bulls

Head Coach Quin Snyder provided insights into the injury suffered by Onyeka Okongwu, the Atlanta Hawks’ big man, during their recent defeat against the Chicago Bulls. The loss to the Bulls further pushed the Hawks down in the Eastern Conference standings, leaving them trailing by 2.0 games for the ninth spot with 28 games remaining in the regular season.

Okongwu’s exit from the game due to a toe injury added to the Hawks’ setbacks, especially given the absence of their starting center, Clint Capela. Snyder explained that Okongwu’s injury occurred during the fourth quarter, and the severity was being assessed at the moment.

Despite Okongwu’s solid performance with 11 points, 12 rebounds, one assist, and one block, the Hawks struggled defensively, allowing the Bulls to maintain a 10-point lead even after his departure.

Snyder emphasized the team’s need to improve defensively, particularly in defending against pick-and-roll plays and maintaining proper rotations to prevent opponents from driving to the basket effectively.

Snyder highlighted Ayo Dosunmu’s impactful performance for the Bulls, as he scored a career-high 29 points and contributed to limiting Trae Young’s offensive output. Young had a challenging night, finishing with 19 points on low shooting efficiency, largely due to Dosunmu’s defensive efforts.

Regarding De’Andre Hunter, who returned from injury and continued to come off the bench, Snyder praised his defensive efforts against DeMar DeRozan. Hunter’s defensive prowess was evident as he contributed 24 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and one steal to the game.

Snyder also commended Hunter’s aggressiveness from beyond the arc, noting his ability to capitalize on open looks and create opportunities for his teammates. Hunter’s consistent performance from three-point range has been a positive aspect for the Hawks in recent games.

Looking ahead, the Hawks will face the Charlotte Hornets on February 14, aiming to bounce back from their recent loss. The Hawks are seeking redemption against the Hornets, who emerged victorious in their previous encounter back in October.
