Joey Chestnut responds after being disqualified from the Hot Dog Contest

"Competitive Eating Champion Addresses Controversy and Future Plans"

Tuesday, following her disqualification from the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, Joey Chestnut responded on social media.

According to reports, Chestnut received an offer of a four-year, $1.2 million contract to stay in the Nathan’s competition, which is held annually on July 4th at Coney Island in New York. Nevertheless, Chestnut agreed to promote Impossible Foods instead. Since Impossible Foods is viewed as a rival or competitor of Nathan’s Hot Dogs, Major League Eating (MLE) decided to prevent Chestnut from participating in the competition. The Nathan’s annual hot dog competition is run by MLE.

Chestnut, 40, answered using his X profile.

“I was devastated to hear in the media that I had been disqualified from the Nathan’s July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest for 19 years. Chestnut wrote in a message on X, “I love competing in that event, I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the Fourth of July, and I have been training to defend my title.”

To be clear, neither MLE nor Nathans have a contract with me, and they want to alter the previous year’s regulations on the other partners I can collaborate with. This appears to be the reason for my suspension, and it has nothing to do with the July 4th celebration.

“Unfortunately, Nathan’s and Major League Eating have made this decision, which will rob the wonderful fans of the customary happiness and amusement surrounding the occasion. I adore and respect all of my fans. You may be confident that I’ll be eating soon! Remain satiated!

Chestnut has sixteen victories in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Since 2016, he has won the Fourth of July competition every year. In 2021, he consumed a world record 76 hot dogs and buns.

  1. This is really disappointing news! Joey Chestnut is the heart and soul of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. It won’t be the same without him.

  2. The Fourth of July won’t be the same without Joey Chestnut competing. MLE needs to reconsider their decision. Let the man eat!
