Lakers’ Strong Effort Falls Short Against Nuggets, Raising Questions for Coach Darvin Ham

The atmosphere at Arena on Thursday night brimmed with emotion as the Los Angeles Lakers (27-26) unveiled the Kobe Bryant statue before facing off against the Denver Nuggets (36-16). Despite displaying the grit and toughness that would likely earn respect from the late Mamba, the Lakers succumbed to the defending NBA champions, losing 114-106.

Following the game, Lakers head coach Darvin Ham expressed satisfaction with his team’s effort, giving them an A+ grade “for their competitiveness and performance against Denver,” as reported by The Athletic’s Jovan Buha. This acknowledgment of a moral victory in the NBA could, however, further divide a fan base seeking tangible improvement, especially with just 29 regular-season games left.

Despite the celebratory tone of the night, there are positive takeaways from the loss. Anthony Davis showcased an impressive performance, scoring a game-high 32 points on 14-of-27 shooting, along with nine rebounds, four blocks, and three steals. LeBron James also contributed with a balanced 25/9/7 stat line. In the fourth quarter, the two stars kept the Lakers neck-and-neck with the Nuggets, tying the score at 104 with over two minutes remaining. However, a 10-0 scoring run by Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. sealed the road victory for Denver.

While resilience proved crucial for the Lakers last year, losing despite strong performances from James and Davis raises concerns. The effectiveness of the supporting cast has been a season-long topic, with injuries and underachievement plaguing the team. Now that the trade deadline has passed, there’s no room for concern going forward.

For the Lakers to succeed, a collective effort is imperative, especially in their home court. Simply giving their best won’t suffice if they find themselves once again fighting for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Additionally, such performances won’t bode well for Darvin Ham during his upcoming performance review.
