Latest-Toronto Raptors Make Major Moves Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline

The Toronto Raptors were notably active leading up to the NBA trade deadline, engaging in two separate transactions. Firstly, guard Ochai Agbaji and Canadian center Kelly Olynyk were acquired by the Raptors from the Utah Jazz in exchange for guard Kira Lewis Jr., forward Otto Porter Jr., and a 2024 first-round draft pick.

Subsequently, the Raptors traded guard Dennis Schroder and forward Thad Young to the Brooklyn Nets in return for guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Following this move, Dinwiddie was waived by Toronto.

As a result of these trades, the Raptors now possess three first-round draft picks for the upcoming summer, with reports indicating that the least favorable of these picks will be sent to the Jazz as part of the exchange for Olynyk and Agbaji.

Olynyk, who hails from Toronto but grew up in Kamloops, B.C., notably captained Canada’s bronze medal-winning team at the FIBA World Cup. He is part of the core group of players committed to representing Canada at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Currently, Olynyk is averaging 8.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists this season, while Agbaji, selected as the 14th pick in the 2022 NBA draft, holds averages of 5.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.9 assists.

Porter, a 30-year-old forward, has faced injury setbacks since joining Toronto in July 2022, undergoing season-ending surgery last year and dealing with a knee injury this season, limiting him to just eight games played.

Lewis, who arrived in Toronto as part of a previous trade involving Pascal Siakam, only appeared in one game for the Raptors, registering minimal playing time. His season averages stand at 2.8 points, 1.1 assists, and 0.9 rebounds over 16 games.

Schroder, who signed a significant contract with Toronto in June, began the season as the Raptors’ starting point guard before being displaced to the bench following a trade that brought in RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley from the New York Knicks. He is averaging 13.7 points, 6.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds this season.

Thad Young, although seeing limited action for most of his tenure with the Raptors, has seen increased playing time since early January, averaging five points, 3.3 rebounds, and two assists over 23 games this season.

Dinwiddie, who boasted averages of 12.6 points, six assists, and 3.3 rebounds over 48 games with the Nets, was a significant contributor, often logging over 30 minutes per game.
