Lecce has terminated the contract of manager Roberto D’Aversa following an incident where he made physical contact with an opposing player during their recent defeat to Hellas Verona, as announced by the Serie A club on Monday.
D’Aversa allegedly headbutted Verona’s Thomas Henry after Lecce’s 1-0 home loss on Sunday. The club swiftly condemned the behavior in a statement released later that day, leading to the dismissal of the 48-year-old coach.
“In light of the events following the Lecce-Verona match, U.S. Lecce announces the dismissal of coach Roberto D’Aversa,” the club stated.Breaking: Mayfield’s Extension, Buccaneers Secure Quarterback’s Future
Both D’Aversa and Henry received red cards for their actions. D’Aversa, who began coaching Lecce in June 2023, expressed regret, attributing the incident to continuous provocation directed at his players towards the end of the game.Erling Haaland’s Goal Blitz Ignites Manchester City’s FA Cup Charge
Lecce has won only five out of their 28 league matches this season, placing them 15th with 25 points, just one point above the relegation zone. Verona’s victory in the match moved them to 13th place with 26 points, overtaking Lecce in the standings.
