Leeds United last-gasp raid on Newcastle United for Defender

Late interest for Newcastle United Paul Dummett ahead of tonight’s 11 p.m. deadline, with Leeds United and Ipswich Town, two teams vying for the veteran defender’s signing and a spot in the Championship automatically promoted.

On transfer deadline day, it seems that Newcastle United won’t be adding any players, but as has been the case all summer, departures are always a possibility.

Big players like Miguel Almiron, Kieran Trippier, and Callum Wilson are expected to stay on Tyneside despite rumors about their futures, thus none of them will be departing. However, Isaac Hayden, a peripheral defensive midfielder, should be headed for a move elsewhere.

Rumors about Jamaal Lascelles moving to Turkey are still circulating, and now Leeds and Ipswich are showing interest in Newcastle United defender Dummett.

Despite being marginalized by Eddie Howe these days, the 32-year-old remains a dependable player and an important leader in the locker room. The former Wales international has made 209 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions since graduating from the youth ranks.

Though it seems he is happy with what he is doing now, it would make sense for Dummett to play regular football again at this point in his career. The left-back has only played 43 games across all competitions for his boyhood club since the 2019–20 season.

Throughout the season, he has only achieved two starts (both in the Cup) and four minutes of Premier League involvement. He performed admirably in the Magpies’ triumphs over Manchester United and City to get to the EFL Cup quarterfinals. It is unlikely that Dummett will play a large role in Newcastle’s two-front lineup this season.

This might be the final opportunity for the Magpies to acquire a little fee because the 32-year-old’s contract expires this summer. Nevertheless, it won’t come as a shock if the Toon chooses to obstruct the 32-year-old’s departure at this time.

There wouldn’t be much of a gain to letting him go unless the player actively pursues a transfer out of St. James’ Park and no suitable replacement is available. Howe can still cover at left-back and center-back, but he appears to prefer his background, attitude, and leadership abilities behind the scenes.
