Leeds United’s Wealth of Options: Daniel Farke’s Squad Dilemmas for the Rest of the Season

Daniel Farke now finds himself with an abundance of choices in his Leeds United squad as they progress through the remainder of the season.

While only one new player was brought in during January, the team suddenly appears to be overflowing with options due to the emergence of several fringe players in 2024. Despite appearing to settle on a starting XI between October and December, a string of poor results over the festive period prompted Farke to integrate players like Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo, and Ilia Gruev into the lineup.

In terms of the goalkeeper position, Illan Meslier seems to be one of the few players with a secured spot in the starting lineup.

However, the situation in defense is less certain, with decisions to be made in almost every position across the back four. While Archie Gray has excelled at right-back this season, the presence of Connor Roberts, who brings promotion experience, adds to the dilemma. These players have essentially made themselves indispensable due to their recent performances, but once everyone is fully fit, some prominent names may find themselves on the bench.

Considering the options, here is an attempt to select the strongest XI and bench. When considering the full-back position, Sam Byram and Junior Firpo present close competition, but Firpo’s attacking prowess gives him the edge. In central defense, while Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk have been the preferred partnership, Ethan Ampadu performed commendably in Struijk’s absence. Nevertheless, Struijk shouldn’t be sidelined when fit.

The reintroduction of Struijk into defense affects the midfield selection. Despite the effective partnership between Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara, Ampadu’s form makes him indispensable. Depending on the game, the strengths of Gruev and Kamara may be suited differently, with Gruev currently in better form. Additionally, Gray presents another strong option in midfield.
