Media Attention and Clubhouse Leadership: Navigating the Arrival of Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers

The Dodgers are facing a fresh hurdle this season with Shohei Ohtani joining the team: a surge in media attention.

DodgerFest was inundated with reporters, and the initial days of Dodgers spring training have been bustling with media presence, coming from both Japan and the United States.
Ohtani engaged with reporters at Camelback Ranch on Friday, drawing considerable attention. However, it’s apparent that Ohtani won’t be available for media interactions every day, a situation Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is accustomed to handling.

During his time playing alongside Barry Bonds, Roberts became the unofficial team spokesperson as Bonds didn’t engage with the media daily. So, who will assume that role for the Dodgers?

Heyward re-signed with the Dodgers for a one-year contract this offseason, following a stint on a minor league deal last year, which saw him rejuvenate his career.

In the 2023 season, he recorded a batting line of .269/.340/.473 with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs across 124 games.

His impressive performance earned him a lucrative contract this offseason, secured from Los Angeles. Heyward expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to the team this year.

Having already established himself as one of the clubhouse leaders last season, Heyward is likely willing to undertake additional media responsibilities to support his new superstar teammate this year.
