Minnesota Vikings Consider Former Jets QBs as Contenders to Replace Kirk Cousins

According to Zack Rosenblatt, an insider for the NFL and the New York Jets at The Athletic, there’s speculation that the Minnesota Vikings might be eyeing two former Jets quarterbacks to potentially replace Kirk Cousins, especially if Cousins joins the Atlanta Falcons soon.

Rosenblatt, in an article published on Thursday, suggests that the Vikings could sign Sam Darnold, currently a backup for the San Francisco 49ers, in free agency, and trade for Zach Wilson, who is likely to be let go by the Jets.

Rosenblatt points out that the recent re-signing of Mike Evans by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers indicates they’re not planning to rebuild, potentially leading to a scenario where the Vikings might secure Darnold before he hits free agency.

While Darnold hasn’t had much success as a starter, Rosenblatt believes that with a year under Kyle Shanahan’s coaching in San Francisco, he could be ready for another chance at leading a team.

Darnold was initially drafted by the Jets in 2018 but was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. After a stint with Carolina, he signed with the 49ers as a backup. It’s suggested that Shanahan preferred Darnold over Trey Lance, who was subsequently traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

As for Wilson, his tenure with the Jets hasn’t been successful, and it’s speculated that the Jets might have to offer a draft pick to offload him this offseason. However, Rosenblatt believes that in the right environment, Wilson could still thrive, suggesting Minnesota as a potential fit.

Additionally, the Vikings are considering veteran quarterback Joe Flacco from the Cleveland Browns as a transitional option. Flacco has a history of success under offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, earning accolades for his performance in 2023. While Baker Mayfield is a top target for the Vikings, it’s expected that he will re-sign with the Buccaneers.
