New England Patriots Undergo Offensive Coaching Overhaul: Bill O’Brien Eyes Patriots Assistant Will Lawing as Offensive Coordinator

The ongoing revamp of the coaching staff for the New England Patriots seems to be continuing, particularly on the offensive front.

Bill O’Brien is reportedly in the process of bringing Patriots tight ends coach Will Lawing aboard as his offensive coordinator at Boston College, as per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. This move would be logical given Lawing’s previous collaborations with O’Brien in Houston, New England, and at Penn State and the University of Alabama.

If Lawing indeed joins O’Brien, his stint with the Patriots will be short-lived.

While the defensive coaching staff has seen some continuity with DeMarcus Covington, Mike Pellegrino, Brian Belichick, and Jerod Mayo, the offensive side has seen significant changes.

Mayo has already made several additions to the offensive coaching staff, including Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator, Ben McAdoo as senior offensive assistant, Scott Peters as offensive line coach, T.C. McCartney as quarterbacks coach, Boston Collegeas assistant offensive line coach, and Tiquan Underwood as assistant wide receivers coach. The status of wide receivers coach Troy Brown is uncertain, and there’s also a vacancy at running backs coach following Vinnie Sunseri’s departure for the University of Washington.

Given New England’s poor offensive performance last season, it’s understandable that Mayo is focusing on overhauling this side of the team. Their scoring offense, averaging 13.9 points per game, was among the worst of the past decade.
