Phoenix Suns Eye Delon Wright Amidst Potential Buyout: NBA Trade Deadline Fallout

Delon Wright, the point guard for the Washington Wizards, is possibly facing departure, even though the NBA Trade Deadline for 2024 has passed. Despite this, he stands as a significant candidate for a buyout as he approaches free agency. The Phoenix Suns have expressed interest in acquiring him, according to recent reports.

Playoff contenders, including the Suns, are closely observing the situation regarding the potential buyout of Delon Wright, sources informed HoopsHype. Since the trade deadline, Wright has seen limited playing time, averaging only 4.6 minutes per game across four games for the Wizards before the All-Star break. Throughout the season, his statistics have been modest, with averages of 4.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He maintains shooting percentages of 39.3% from the field and 36.8% from beyond the arc.

Wright’s playing time of 13.8 minutes per game marks the lowest since his rookie season in 2015-16.

The Suns, currently holding the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference alongside the New Orleans Pelicans, are evidently seeking to bolster their roster for a strong second-half push, despite recently acquiring veteran forward Thaddeus Young.

Wright would bring valuable attributes to the Suns, serving as a savvy and dependable point guard capable of leading the team’s bench unit. Standing at 6’5″, he also offers versatility, capable of playing as a shooting guard if required. While his defense may not be exceptional, it shouldn’t be a deterrent.

Before the Trade Deadline, various playoff contenders, notably the Celtics, Kings, and Timberwolves, expressed interest in acquiring Wright via trade, as reported by league sources. The Nuggets were also mentioned in connection with him by Marc Stein.

Although the Timberwolves have since acquired Monte Morris, another guard the Suns previously eyed, the Kings, Celtics, and Nuggets have not secured a point guard post-Deadline. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that these teams would maintain interest in Wright if he becomes available via buyout.

Teams have until February 29th to finalize buyout agreements, leaving roughly two weeks for potential transactions to occur.
