Reassessing the Cincinnati Bengals’ Safety Strategy for the 2024 Season

Following the departure of Jessie Bates III and Vonn Bell, the Cincinnati Bengals faced a challenge at the safety positions heading into the 2023 season.

Dax Hill and Nick Scott were initially fielded, but Scott’s inconsistent performance led to the insertion of rookie Jordan Battle, who excelled for the remainder of the season. However, Hill struggled throughout, contributing to the secondary’s difficulties due to his lack of experience in the role.

As they prepare for the 2024 season, the Bengals are maintaining a similar lineup in the secondary, featuring DJ Turner, Cam Taylor-Britt, Mike Hilton, alongside Battle and Hill. Yet, there’s a question lingering: is this lineup sufficient?

While the Bengals have pressing needs in other areas like tight end, offensive tackle, and defensive tackle, upgrading the safety position could be beneficial. Hill might be better suited as a backup to Hilton at the nickel spot, a position he frequented during his time at Michigan. Additionally, with Hilton’s contract expiring soon, Hill could serve as a potential replacement.

This adjustment could enable the Bengals to pair Battle with another safety who excels in a center-field role. Hill’s remarkable athleticism could make him a formidable force rushing the quarterback or defending against the run.

Looking ahead, the 2024 free agency class offers options like Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Jeremy Chinn, and Antoine Winfield Jr., while promising prospects such as Josh Proctor, Andre Sam, Tyler Owens, and Jaylin Simpson are available in the upcoming draft.

The question arises: should the Bengals invest in safety through free agency or allocate an early draft pick to address this position?
