Reds Split Squad: Offensive Struggles and Strong Performances Highlight Spring Games

The Cincinnati Reds played two games today, marking their first split-squad matches of the spring season. In their first game against the Seattle Mariners, they narrowly escaped a no-hitter but struggled offensively. However, they bounced back in their second game against the Milwaukee Brewers, showcasing a strong offensive performance and securing the win.

In the Mariners game, both teams engaged in a tense pitching battle for much of the match, with minimal hits recorded. Seattle managed to score two unearned runs in the 8th inning, taking advantage of defensive lapses from Cincinnati. The Reds’ offense remained dormant until the 8th inning when Jacob Hurtubise finally broke the no-hitter with a single. Despite this effort, they fell short, losing 2-0.

Pitching stood out for the Reds throughout the game, with notable performances from Andrew Abbott, Lyon Richardson, and Lucas Sims. However, their offensive struggles were evident as they failed to register a hit until late in the game, with only one baserunner reaching on a walk.

In contrast, the Reds’ second game against the Brewers saw a marked improvement in their offensive display. They capitalized on Milwaukee’s pitching, hitting two home runs and scoring runs consistently. Pitcher Nick Martinez delivered a strong performance in his spring debut, supported by an effective offensive lineup led by Tyler Callihan and Elly De La Cruz.

The Reds maintained their lead throughout the game, with contributions from various players including Stuart Fairchild and Rece Hinds, securing an 8-3 victory. Despite some pitching challenges, particularly in the 6th inning, the Reds’ bullpen held firm, securing the win for the team.

Tyler Callihan continued his impressive form, adding two more hits to his spring training stats, while Elly De La Cruz also made significant contributions with the bat.

Looking ahead, Graham Ashcraft, who provided updates during the Mariners game, is set to make his debut on Thursday, indicating progress in his recovery. Additionally, the Reds will face the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, with radio coverage available for fans wishing to follow the game.
