SAD NEWS: German Legend dies at 78

At the age of 78, German football hero Franz Beckenbauer passed away. He will be remembered as one of the best defenders in history.

The center back started his career at Bayern Munich, having progressed through the development systems of the Bavarian team before enjoying an amazing career with the German powerhouse.

In his 13 years at the Munich-based team, Beckenbauer would go on to win four Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokals, and three European Cups before moving to the United States in 1977 to play for the New York Cosmos.

In 1980, the defender went back to Germany to rejoin Hamburger SV, where he would go on to win a fifth German championship.

Still, Beckenbauer established himself on the biggest platform in sport.

Only three men have won the World Cup both as a manager and a player, including Beckenbauer. In 1974, the defender led the German national team to victory in a domestic competition. He then managed the team to another title in Italy in 1990.

In 1972, the defender would also win the European Championship, which took place in Belgium and saw Germany overcome the Soviet Union 3-0.

In all, Beckenbauer amassed 104 caps for his country and had a significant influence on domestic football. The defender is revered in the entire football world, but many Germans who learned of his death on Monday will find it difficult to accept.
