Twists and Turns: Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Search Unfolds with Leslie Frazier Out, New Candidates Emerge

The Miami Dolphins are in the midst of their quest for a new defensive coordinator, and the latest development has thrown a curveball into the mix. Leslie Frazier, the former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, is no longer available.

Frazier has inked a deal with the Seattle Seahawks to serve as the assistant head coach under the recently hired Mike Macdonald, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Frazier’s departure leaves Chris Shula and Bobby Babich, among others, as notable candidates for the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator position. Shula and Babich have secured promotions with the L.A. Rams and Buffalo Bills, respectively, as they step into the role of defensive coordinator.

The Dolphins now have five candidates in the running to fill the vacancy left by the mutual parting of ways with Vic Fangio: Anthony Campanile, Ryan Slowik, Anthony Weaver, Brandon Staley, and Chris Kiffin. Notably, Weaver and Staley bring prior experience as defensive coordinators.

Jalen Ramsey, the star cornerback for the Dolphins, fondly recalls his time playing under Staley during the latter’s tenure as the Rams’ defensive coordinator in 2020. Staley’s coaching prowess helped lead the Rams to the number one ranking in both total defense and pass defense that season, earning Ramsey All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

Adding to the list of candidates is Chris Kiffin, a former colleague of Mike McDaniel, who is currently the linebackers coach for the Houston Texans. Kiffin previously worked as a pass rush specialist for the San Francisco 49ers when McDaniel served as their run game coordinator.

On a different note, Bobby Babich, highly regarded linebackers coach for the Buffalo Bills, has been promoted to the position of defensive coordinator. Babich, who has been an NFL assistant since 2011, has a history of working with Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel during their time with the Cleveland Browns in 2014.

The latest update reveals that Anthony Weaver, the Baltimore Ravens’ associate head coach and defensive line coach, is being considered for the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator position. Weaver and McDaniel previously worked together with the Cleveland Browns in 2014.

Weaver, a former NFL player, served as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in 2020. His coaching career also includes a stint as the run game coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. The decision on Weaver’s candidacy hinges on the upcoming interview and McDaniel’s vision for the team.

As the search for a new defensive coordinator intensifies, other candidates in the mix include Anthony Campanile, Ryan Slowik, and the possibility of Renaldo Hill, the secondary coach, being added to the pool of in-house candidates.

Former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is the lone candidate with previous head coaching experience. Staley’s tenure with the Chargers concluded in December after a 24-24 record and a playoff appearance in 2022 that ended with a narrow loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
