Washington Nationals Sign Jesse Winker to Minor League Deal: Opportunity Amidst Declining Performance

The Washington Nationals have recently inked a minor league contract with Jesse Winker, a former All-Star outfielder, as reported by Andrew Golden of the Washington Post on social media. Winker, who will be joining the team for spring training, adds another left-handed bat to the outfield mix.

Despite his standout performance in 2021 with the Cincinnati Reds, where he boasted a .305 batting average alongside 24 home runs and 71 RBIs, Winker’s stats have taken a significant dip over the past couple of years.

Following a trade to the Seattle Mariners in 2022, his numbers declined sharply, with his power notably diminishing as he hit just 14 home runs and tallied 53 RBIs while batting .219 with a .344 on-base percentage.

In 2023, after another trade, this time to the Milwaukee Brewers, Winker’s struggles persisted, as he played in only 61 games, hitting just one home run and bringing in 23 RBIs with a .199 batting average and a .320 on-base percentage.

With the Nationals expected to finish at the bottom of the National League East, there could be opportunities for Winker to revive his career with the team, although they already have promising young outfielders such as Dylan Crews on the brink of the major leagues. Currently, the Nationals’ outfield roster includes Alex Call, Joey Gallo, Stone Garrett, Victor Robles, Lane Thomas, and Jacob Young, with Crews and James Wood standing out as the team’s top two outfield prospects.
