WNBA Returns to Canada: Preseason Game Set for Edmonton

The WNBA is returning to Canada, following the success of last year’s preseason game in Toronto. This summer, a preseason game will be held in Edmonton, featuring the Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks on May 5, 2024, as announced by the league on Thursday.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed excitement about bringing the Sparks and Storm to Edmonton, highlighting the positive reception of women’s basketball in Canada showcased during last year’s game in Toronto.

She noted the record viewership, merchandise sales, and attendance, emphasizing the opportunity to promote the league in a city with strong sporting traditions, referencing the Edmonton Grads and Canadian Women’s National Basketball Team.

Similar to Toronto, where the preseason game sold out at Scotiabank Arena, organizers hope for a full house at Rogers Arena in Edmonton. Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi highlighted the city’s enthusiastic sports culture and its rich history in women’s basketball, mentioning the legacy of the Edmonton Grads. The upcoming game will be a homecoming for Kia Nurse, recently acquired by the Sparks. Ticket sales for the event will commence on March 20.
