Zak Zinter Discusses J.J. McCarthy’s Potential Fit with the New England Patriots: A Look at the 2024 NFL Draft Landscape

Zak Zinter, an offensive lineman who worked alongside quarterback J.J. McCarthy at Michigan Wolverines, recently discussed McCarthy’s potential fit with the New England Patriots, who currently hold the third pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, in an interview with Greg Dudek of NESN.

Zinter expressed confidence that McCarthy would appreciate the Patriots’ culture if he were to join the team, highlighting McCarthy’s qualities as a leader, competitor, and teammate, whom Zinter describes as “unreal.” McCarthy’s sudden rise in draft stock has become a hot topic in sports discussions, with some now ranking him as the second-best quarterback prospect behind USC’s Caleb Williams.

Previously, it was expected that the Washington Commanders would select LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second pick, but recent reports suggest that McCarthy may now be in contention for both Washington and New England’s top quarterback choice.

Regarding the Patriots’ culture, it’s worth noting that the team is transitioning into a new era following the departure of longtime head coach Bill Belichick. With new head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt at the helm, the Patriots are gearing up to integrate a rookie quarterback into their system if they opt for one in the draft.

Zinter emphasized McCarthy’s exceptional qualities on and off the field, describing him as a remarkable player and teammate whom he’s had the privilege of playing with for the past three years.

Observers who have analyzed McCarthy’s college performance point to his playmaking abilities, evident in his game film where he adeptly handles pressure situations and delivers crucial plays, according to Zinter.

In a recent mock draft by Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN, he predicts that the Patriots will select Drake Maye at pick No. 3, while the Minnesota Vikings will trade up to the fifth pick to acquire McCarthy. However, there are indications that some insiders still believe the Patriots might opt for McCarthy if Washington selects Daniels, as suggested in Kiper’s mock draft.
